A Few Sicilian Dialect Proverbs & Phrases
There are differences between the Sicilian dialect and the formal language of mainland Italy. The dialects of Sicily, like the architecture, customs and the cuisine, were influenced by the island’s many occupants – Greek, Latin, Arabic, French, Lombard and Spanish – making it a very rich language indeed.
In addition, it is interesting to know that there are subtle sub-dialects on the island that have remained isolated and have been handed down through the generations.
Sicilian: Quannu parrinu a nostra lingua, ci fa tanto piaciri.
English: When they speak our language, it gives us pleasure.
Sicilian: A casa capi quantu voli u patruni.
English: A house can hold as many people as the host or owner wishes.
Sicilian: Lutanu ri visti, luntanu re cori.
English: Out of sight, out of mind.
Sicilian: ‘Nta paisi nuovo comu viri fari fai.
English: In a new town, do as you see others do.
Sicilian: A passioni nun senti ragghiuni.
English: Passion doesn’t listen to reason.
Sicilian: Cu cerca trova.
English: He who seeks, finds.
